Your phone suddenly feels weird. Apps take longer to open. The battery drops faster than it used to. Maybe random ads appear even when you’re not browsing. Don’t ignore that feeling.

Watch for Changes That Don’t Make Sense

Start with the obvious stuff. Is your phone getting hot while you’re barely using it? Is the battery disappearing unusually fast? And are apps crashing for no clear reason?

One strange symptom doesn’t prove anything. Phones slow down for plenty of normal reasons. But several odd changes appearing around the same time deserve a closer look.

Check Your Apps First

Open your installed apps and actually look through them. You might find something you don’t remember installing. That’s a strong reason to investigate.

• An app you genuinely don’t recognize, especially one installed recently, deserves attention before you tap it again.

• Pop-up ads showing up outside your browser are especially suspicious. Your phone shouldn’t behave like a billboard.

• A familiar app suddenly asking for strange permissions? Pause there. A calculator doesn’t need access to your contacts just because it asked nicely.

Look at Battery and Data Usage

Your phone keeps useful clues in its settings. Check which apps are using the most battery. Then look at mobile data usage.

Malware often runs in the background. If an unfamiliar app is constantly active or quietly chewing through data, that’s worth checking. You don’t need to become a security expert. You’re simply looking for something that doesn’t fit.

Don’t Ignore Weird Browser Behavior

Sometimes the phone itself isn’t infected. The browser is simply dealing with a bad notification permission or a shady website.

If unfamiliar tabs keep opening, your search results look wrong, or notifications suddenly push questionable ads, check your browser’s site permissions. Remove anything you don’t recognize.

Run a Malware Scan

If the warning signs continue, run a security scan using a reputable mobile security app. On Android, Google Play Protect is a sensible first check because it can scan installed apps and flag harmful software.

Keep the scan simple. Don’t download three different “phone cleaner” apps because the first one claims your phone is dying. More security apps don’t automatically mean more security.
