Stick to Trusted App Stores
Your first line of defense is where you get the app. On Android, the Google Play Store is the obvious choice, and honestly, that’s where I’d start every time. Apps there go through security checks, even though no system catches everything.
Check Before You Install
Spend a few seconds looking at the app page. Check who published it. Look at recent reviews too, because old reviews can stay visible long after an app has changed hands or started behaving badly.
• The developer name matters. A strange spelling or an unfamiliar company deserves another look before you install.
• Very few reviews, especially when the app claims to be hugely popular, feels wrong for a reason.
• Permission requests can be a giveaway. A simple calculator asking for access to your messages should make you pause.
Don’t Trust Random APK Links
APK files are useful. They also make it easier to install software outside the normal app store, which means you need to take more responsibility for what you’re installing.
Pay Attention After Installation
Malware doesn’t always announce itself immediately. Sometimes your phone simply starts feeling different. Ads appear where they shouldn’t. Battery life drops. An app keeps asking for permissions that don’t make sense.
A Little Suspicion Goes a Long Way
You don’t need to become a security expert to avoid most malware. Use trusted sources. Check the developer. Read the permissions. And don’t let an urgent-looking download button make the decision for you.
