The worst part is not even the money at first. It’s that tiny second where you open Instagram, search the page, and realise you’re blocked. The chat is gone from your side. The profile looks empty. Your stomach drops a bit. And then the anger comes.
First, Don’t Panic and Don’t Beg Them
If an Instagram page took money and blocked you, don’t keep messaging from another account like you’re asking for a favour. They already showed you what this is. A genuine seller may delay. A scam page disappears.
Save your energy for the part that actually matters.
Take Screenshots Before Anything Vanishes
If you still have anything open, screenshot it. The order chat. The payment proof. Their Instagram handle. Their bio. The product post. The story where they offered the deal. Even the block screen. Small details matter later, especially when the page changes its username and pretends nothing happened.
• Screenshot the profile with the username visible, not just the display name, because display names are basically costumes
• Keep the payment receipt in one place. UPI ID, phone number, and transaction ID are the useful bits here
• If a friend can still see the page, ask them to record the profile calmly. No angry comments under the post
Priya once ordered a handmade phone case from a page that had pretty reels and fake customer reviews. She paid ₹899 while sitting in a cab near Dadar, then got blocked the next morning. What helped her was one boring screenshot of the UPI receipt. Not the long angry paragraph she typed and deleted twice.
Report the Instagram Page, But Don’t Stop There
Instagram reporting is fine for removing the page. It does not automatically get your money back. That’s the annoying truth. Still, report the account for scam or fraud because it creates a platform record, and if enough people report it, the page may get restricted faster.
But your real action should happen outside Instagram too.
Use Cyber Crime Reporting in India
If you’re in India, file a complaint on the National Cyber Crime Portal at cybercrime.gov.in. You can also call 1930 quickly if the payment was recent. This matters more when the money was sent through UPI or bank transfer, because fast reporting gives the bank and authorities a better chance to trace or freeze the amount.
Don’t wait for the scammer to “reply tomorrow.” They won’t. And even if they do, it’ll usually be another excuse about courier issues or refund processing.

• Call your bank or UPI app support and raise a fraud dispute, even if they sound bored on the phone
Don’t Delete the Chat Out of Embarrassment
This happens to normal people. Smart people too. Instagram shopping feels casual, and that is exactly why scam pages work so well. A good reel, a discount that feels believable, and a few stolen customer photos are enough to make a page look real.
Honestly, I don’t like the way people blame the buyer in these cases. Of course you should check before paying. But the bigger problem is that scam pages can look more polished than real small businesses. That part is ridiculous.
Check If the Page Changed Its Name
Go to the profile if you can still see it from another account. Tap the account details if available. Many scam pages keep changing usernames after each round of fraud. If you notice old names, screenshot that too. It shows a pattern.
Also search the username on Google. Sometimes victims post warnings on Reddit, complaint forums, or comment sections. Not always. But when they do, it feels like finding the missing piece.
What You Should Do Next Time
I know, nobody wants a lesson right after losing money. Still. Next time, avoid full advance payment to random pages. Check comments properly. See if real customers are tagged. Ask for cash on delivery if possible. If they rush you with “last piece left,” slow down on purpose.
