A fake giveaway only works because it looks close enough to the real thing that your brain fills in the missing pieces before you even notice what’s off. I don’t think scammers are especially clever. They’re patient, and people scroll fast.

Slow down before you get excited

A real brand usually has a reason for running a giveaway. Maybe it’s a product launch. Maybe it’s a milestone. You can usually spot that story by looking through older posts instead of only reading the giveaway caption.

But fake accounts often appear out of nowhere. They copy photos from someone else and hope nobody checks. The profile feels empty after a minute or two, even if the follower count looks surprisingly high.

The account itself tells a story

• Very few original posts, and the comments somehow all sound alike. After a while it starts feeling oddly rehearsed.

• The username has an extra letter or a random symbol. You’d be surprised how often people miss that on the first glance.

Because real businesses care about trust, they don’t usually ask winners to send passwords or login codes. They don’t need them. If someone asks for either, close the chat and move on.

Watch how they ask you to “win”

One thing always bothers me. Fake giveaways love urgency. They tell you that you have ten minutes left or your prize disappears forever. That pressure isn’t there to help you. It’s there so you stop thinking.

A message saying you only need to “verify” yourself by paying a small shipping fee. A prize that starts with a payment isn’t really a prize.

DMs deserve extra suspicion

Winning through a direct message before the giveaway even ends makes no sense. Neither does being told to click a strange link that leads somewhere outside Instagram with a page that looks rushed. You stop noticing those little cracks if you’re already imagining the reward.

Free stuff gets attention. That’s the whole point.
