A Facebook Messenger gift card scam is exactly what it sounds like. Someone contacts you through Messenger and tries to convince you to buy a gift card, then asks for the code on the back. Once they have that code, the money is gone. You don’t get it back. And the scammer disappears almost as quickly as they showed up.<\/p>\n

How the scam usually starts<\/h2>\n

Most people don’t get a random message that screams “I’m a scammer.” Instead, they receive a message from someone they already know. A friend’s Facebook account may have been hacked, so the chat looks familiar and your guard drops before you even notice.<\/p>\n

The scammer says they’re stuck somewhere. Maybe they can’t access online banking. Maybe they promise to pay you back in an hour. Then comes the request to buy a gift card from a nearby store and send a photo of the code.<\/p>\n

Signs you shouldn’t ignore<\/h2>\n

Just notice when the conversation feels slightly off.<\/p>\n
