Start With the Number Itself<\/h2>\n

Look at the area code first. If someone claims they\u2019re calling from your city but the number has an area code from somewhere you\u2019ve never dealt with, pause. That alone doesn\u2019t prove anything, because people move and keep old numbers. Still, it\u2019s worth noticing.<\/p>\n

Then search the number online. Put it in quotation marks and see what comes up. If other people have reported it as a scam, you\u2019ll often find warnings on public forums or complaint sites.<\/p>\n

A number that leads nowhere isn\u2019t automatically fake either. New numbers can have little online history. The trick is to treat the search as one clue, not a final answer.<\/p>\n

Check Before You Call Back<\/h2>\n

If someone says they\u2019re from your bank, delivery company, workplace, or another service you actually use, don\u2019t call the number they gave you. Find the company\u2019s official number yourself and use that instead.<\/p>\n

And don’t let a convincing voice rush you. That pressure is part of the trick.<\/p>\n

The safest move is often the least exciting one. Don’t answer personal questions just because the caller sounds confident. Don’t click a link they text you. If the call matters, you can verify it independently and deal with it later.<\/p>\n
