Look for Caller Details<\/h2>\n

Your phone may already give you a clue. Caller ID services sometimes show a business name or flag a number as spam. That’s useful, but it’s not perfect. Numbers can be spoofed, which means the number displayed on your screen isn’t always the number that actually made the call.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Several recent spam reports are worth paying attention to, especially when callers leave no message.<\/p>\n

Check Before Calling Back<\/h2>\n

If the caller left a voicemail, listen to it before doing anything else. A real caller will usually give you enough context to understand why they called. Maybe it’s your bank following up on something you actually requested.<\/p>\n

Raj once got three missed calls from a number he didn’t know while he was making tea before work. He searched the number instead of calling back and found it belonged to a local courier service. He stopped reopening the same five tabs every morning after that because he saved the delivery company’s number.<\/p>\n

But a professional-looking caller ID doesn’t prove anything. That’s the annoying part. Caller ID can be useful evidence, but it isn’t proof of identity.<\/p>\n

Search the number. Check the message. Verify the person through a trusted channel if the call matters.<\/p>\n
