You don't recognize it, but the message sounds convincing enough to make you pause. Before you call back or click anythi">

Start With the Number Itself

Search the full phone number online. Put it in quotation marks if you’re using a search engine. If other people have reported the number, you’ll often see complaints describing the same call or message.

But don’t treat one search result as absolute proof. Numbers get recycled. Businesses change numbers. Scammers also spoof real numbers, so a clean search doesn’t automatically mean you’re safe.

Look for the Warning Signs

Pay attention to what the caller actually wants. A request for money is a big one. So is a demand for a verification code or a threat that something will happen if you don’t act immediately.

• Pressure to act right now is a bad sign, especially when the caller won’t give you time to think.

• A request for a one-time code from your bank account should stop the conversation immediately. Your bank doesn’t need that code from you.

• Odd payment methods, such as being told to buy gift cards, are another giveaway, though scammers keep inventing new versions of this trick.

Priya’s Five-Tab Problem

Priya once got a message saying a parcel couldn’t be delivered. She searched the number, then checked the courier’s website separately instead of tapping the message link. She stopped reopening the same five tabs every morning just to track random deliveries, too. Small win.

What to Do If You Suspect a Scam

Don’t call the number back just to see what happens. Block it if the calls keep coming. Report the message or call through your phone provider or the relevant service.

If you’ve already shared money or sensitive information, act quickly. Contact the bank or company involved using a number you found independently. Change exposed passwords. And keep an eye on the account afterward.

The trick is to stop treating the phone number as the evidence. It’s only the starting point.

Start With the Number Itself Search the full phone number online.
