You glance down. Unknown number. Then comes the familiar pause, followed by a recorde">

Start With Your Phone’s Built-In Protection

The easiest fix is already sitting on your phone. Most modern smartphones have settings that can silence calls from numbers you don’t know or flag likely spam before you answer. Turn those features on. There isn’t much reason to leave them disabled unless you regularly expect calls from unfamiliar numbers.

Don’t Give Every Caller Your Attention

If you don’t recognize the number, let it go to voicemail. A real person who needs to reach you will usually leave a message. A robocall often won’t.

And don’t press a number just because the recording tells you to. That can confirm that someone is answering the line, which isn’t information you want to hand over casually.

• Spam warnings turned on. Your phone can catch plenty of obvious junk before you ever hear the pitch.

Be Careful With Your Phone Number

Your number ends up in more places than you probably realize. Online forms ask for it. Stores ask for it. Websites ask for it when you’re trying to get a discount that saves about two dollars.

Don’t Trust Caller ID Too Much

Caller ID feels reassuring because a name or local number appears on the screen. But that information can be faked. A scammer can make the call look like it’s coming from a nearby number, or even from an organization you recognize.

Use Blocking Tools Without Going Overboard

• Carrier-level filtering is worth switching on, especially if spam calls have become a daily nuisance.

Finally, report repeated scam calls when there’s a clear way to do so. It won’t stop the next call immediately. Still, reporting patterns gives phone companies and regulators more information to work with.

You don’t need to become paranoid about every unknown number. Just make unknown callers earn your attention. After a while, the phone gets quieter, and honestly, that’s a pretty nice feeling.

If a call really matters, they’ll find a way to reach you. Why make the robocallers the ones getting through first?

Start With Your Phone’s Built-In Protection The easiest fix is already sitting on your phone.
