Your phone rings. You answer. Someone starts talking about a loan you never asked for.

Turn On Spam Protection in the Phone App

Open the Phone app first. Tap the three-dot menu near the top of the screen, then choose Settings. Look for an option called Spam and Call Screen or Caller ID and spam.

On Google’s Phone app, turn on See caller and spam ID. This lets your phone recognize numbers that are linked to spam reports. You’ll usually also see an option called Filter spam calls. Turn that on too.

And don’t skip the second setting if you have it. Caller ID tells you what a suspicious number might be. Filtering goes further by keeping known spam calls from bothering you in the first place.

If You Have a Samsung Galaxy

Samsung phones use their own Phone app, so the wording is a little different. Open Phone and tap the three-dot menu. Go to Settings, then look for Caller ID and spam protection.

Turn on the spam protection option. Some Galaxy phones also let you choose to block scam calls automatically. If that choice appears, I’d use it. There’s little benefit in personally handling calls that your phone already knows are junk.

Check What Happens to Blocked Calls

Once filtering is active, don’t expect every suspicious call to disappear completely. Unknown numbers can still get through, especially when a caller hasn’t been reported yet.

Your phone may send filtered calls straight to voicemail. It can also show a warning before you answer. Either way, the goal is simple. You get fewer interruptions without having to block every number you don’t recognize.

What About Numbers You Actually Want?

This is where people sometimes get nervous about spam filters. What if the phone blocks a real caller?

Raj had this worry after turning the feature on because he was waiting for a plumber to call. He kept checking his call history while eating lunch at the kitchen table. The plumber got through normally, and Raj stopped reopening the same five tabs every morning to find the company’s number.

Give Yourself One More Layer

Spam protection works best when you combine it with a little common sense. Don’t call back a suspicious number just because it rang once. And never give someone a security code because they claim they’re calling from your bank.

You can also block individual numbers from your recent calls. Tap the number and look for Block or Report spam. It takes a few seconds.

The trick is to let your phone deal with the obvious garbage and handle the unusual calls yourself. Once the protection is running, you barely notice it.

Spam calls have a talent for showing up at the worst time. You’re waiting for a delivery.
