You browse, pages load, and you don’t think much about what the browser is blocking in the background. But sometimes a website notices the protection and refuses to work properly until you loosen it.

Turn Off Protection for One Website

If one website is giving you trouble, don’t disable protection across Firefox. That’s overkill. The better move is to change the setting for that specific site, especially if the page works perfectly everywhere else.

Open the website in Firefox first. Then look near the left side of the address bar for the shield icon. Click it.

Change Enhanced Tracking Protection

A small panel will appear. Look for Enhanced Tracking Protection. Switch it off for the current website by using the toggle provided in the panel.

Firefox will reload the page after the change. If it doesn’t, refresh the tab yourself. The site should now have fewer restrictions, which often fixes pages that depend on scripts or advertising services to display properly.

• The shield icon is the important bit. If you’re staring at the address bar wondering where the setting went, start there.

• Protection stays enabled on other websites, so you aren’t opening the door everywhere just because one page complained.

Disable Ad Blocking From an Extension

Things are different if your ad blocking comes from an extension. Firefox has its own tracking protection, but you may also have an ad blocker installed separately.

Turn Off Firefox Protection More Broadly

If you really want to reduce Firefox’s protection, open the Firefox menu and choose Settings. Then select Privacy & Security.

You’ll find Enhanced Tracking Protection there. Firefox normally keeps it set to Standard, which is a sensible default. You can choose a less restrictive setting if you want fewer protections while browsing.

But I’d avoid disabling everything unless you have a specific reason. Ad blocking isn’t merely about hiding annoying boxes. Tracking protection also limits some of the techniques websites use to follow you around.

• Standard protection is the comfortable middle ground. Most people don’t need to touch it.

• A less restrictive setting makes sense when a trusted website genuinely breaks, though I’d change it only when necessary.

Why the Change Sometimes Doesn’t Work

If ads still don’t appear after disabling Firefox’s protection, the browser may not be the thing blocking them. An extension could still be active. Your network could also filter advertising content before it reaches Firefox.

So check your extensions before changing more browser settings. That simple step saves a surprising amount of fiddling.

And once the website works again, ask yourself something. Do you really want every site to get a free pass just because one of them was being difficult?

Firefox usually keeps ad blocking out of your way.
