Maybe a fake warning telling you your phone has a virus. Sometimes the browser jumps twice before you can even figure out what happened.

Why Redirects Happen

The annoying part is that a redirect doesn’t always come from the page you meant to visit. An ad script can load in the background and send your browser somewhere else. Malicious ads are especially irritating because the original website may look completely normal.

But redirects can also come from the website itself. A broken page might send you to another URL. A site owner could intentionally move visitors. A compromised website might contain injected code that forces the browser to leave.

Where Ad Blocking Helps

Ad blockers work by stopping certain requests before they fully load. If a redirect depends on a blocked ad script or a known tracking domain, the jump may never happen.

That’s a pretty useful layer of protection. You browse normally and the bad request simply gets stopped in the background.

• Redirect caused by a blocked ad network? It may never get a chance to fire.

• Known malicious domains are often caught too, although the blocker needs a rule for that domain.

• Some redirects slip through when the website uses its own code instead of an advertising script.

What Should You Do?

If redirects keep appearing, an ad blocker is a good first move. I’d use one. It removes a lot of junk before the browser has to deal with it, and browsing generally feels calmer afterward.

Still, don’t treat it as a complete shield. Check the website if one particular page keeps redirecting you. Close suspicious tabs instead of clicking warning messages. And if redirects suddenly start happening across many sites, look at your browser extensions and installed software too.

• One website causing the trouble? I’d stop visiting it until you know what’s going on.

• Your blocker needs current filter rules, otherwise newer redirect domains can sneak past it.

• Browser extensions deserve a quick look as well, especially if the redirects started after installing something.

Ad blocking stops plenty of redirects when advertising or tracking code is behind them. But a redirect generated by the site itself can still get through.

You click a normal link and suddenly you’re somewhere else.
