You open a game for two minutes and suddenly the screen is covered by something you never asked to see. Then another ad appears after you close the first one.

Start With Private DNS

If you want one of the easiest methods, try Android’s Private DNS setting. It can route DNS requests through a service that blocks known advertising domains before the app gets them.

On many recent Android phones, open Settings and search for “Private DNS.” Choose the option for a private DNS provider hostname. Then enter a trusted ad-blocking DNS hostname from a provider you trust.

What DNS Blocking Actually Does

DNS blocking happens before an app loads content from certain advertising servers. So an ad request can fail before the advertisement reaches the app.

It won’t remove every ad. Ads that are built directly into an app’s content can still appear, and some apps behave strangely when their advertising requests don’t work.

• A simple phone-wide option, although results depend heavily on the DNS service you choose.

• No separate app sitting on your screen all day, which is honestly one reason I prefer this approach.

Check the App’s Own Settings

Sometimes the least complicated answer is already sitting inside the app. Look through its settings for an option related to ads or a paid version.

I actually prefer this when the price is reasonable. If an app you use every day is genuinely useful, paying once to remove its ads feels cleaner than constantly fighting its network requests.

And some apps let you disable personalized advertising without removing advertisements completely. That’s still useful if privacy bothers you more than the occasional banner.

Don’t Expect a Perfect Block

Android ad blocking has limits. An ad blocker can block many external advertising requests, but it can’t magically rewrite every app.

Some apps also depend on advertising networks for free access. Blocking those requests can cause empty spaces or even break certain features.

Ads inside Android apps get old quickly.
