One appears while you’re reading something. Another lands while you’re typing. Then your screen lights up again because an app has decided you absolutely need to know about a sale happening right now.

Turn Off Notifications You Don’t Need

Start with the apps that keep interrupting you. On most Android phones, open Settings and look for Notifications. Tap App notifications or a similar option, then choose the app that’s causing trouble.

You’ll usually see a switch that lets you turn notifications off completely. If you still want useful alerts from that app, keep notifications on and disable the categories that aren’t important.

Stop the Annoying Ones First

Don’t try to clean up every notification at once. That gets tedious.

• Shopping alerts are usually the first ones worth killing because a discount rarely deserves a screen takeover.

• Social apps tend to be noisy, especially when they’re telling you about activity you didn’t ask to see.

• News notifications can stay useful, but breaking-news alerts are another story if your phone keeps buzzing during work.

Block Pop-Ups From Your Browser

Sometimes the messages aren’t really phone notifications. They’re website notifications sent through your browser.

If you use Chrome on Android, open Chrome’s settings and find Site settings. Look for Notifications. From there, you can block websites from asking to send alerts or remove permission from sites you’ve already allowed.

This is worth checking if strange messages started appearing after you visited a website and tapped “Allow” without thinking much about it. Happens.

Don’t Tap Allow Automatically

A website asking to send notifications isn’t necessarily dangerous, but there’s rarely a reason to give every site that permission. If a page keeps pushing a notification prompt before you’ve even seen what it offers, just block it.

Deal With Full-Screen Pop-Ups

Full-screen ads are a little different. If an ad suddenly appears over everything you’re doing, the problem could be an app rather than a notification setting.

Think about what you installed recently. A free utility app that looked harmless could be responsible, particularly if the pop-ups started soon after you installed it. Remove the suspicious app and see if the problem disappears.

Use Do Not Disturb When You Need Quiet

Sometimes you don’t need to block notifications permanently. You just don’t want them appearing while you’re working, sleeping, or watching something.

That’s where Do Not Disturb makes more sense. Turn it on for a set period or schedule it for certain hours. Your notifications can still arrive in the background without jumping onto the screen every few minutes.

Pop-up messages get annoying fast.
