One pops up while you’re reading. Another appears inside an app you use every day. Then some random notification tries to sell you something at 9:14 in the morning.

You don’t have to accept all of that. Android gives you a few ways to cut down ads, and the best option depends on where they’re coming from.

Start With the App Causing the Ads

If ads appear mainly inside one app, check that app first. Some free apps simply show advertising because that’s how the developer makes money. There isn’t much mystery there.

Look through the app’s settings for an ad-free option. Some apps offer a paid version that removes advertising completely. Honestly, this is often the cleanest fix because the app keeps working normally without you fighting its settings.

Check Notifications Too

Annoying ads aren’t always inside the app itself. Sometimes they’re pushed through notifications.

Press and hold an unwanted notification. Android should show options for controlling notifications from that app. Turn off promotional notifications if they’re available. You don’t need a shopping alert pretending to be important.

Use Android’s Private DNS

This is my favorite built-in option for cutting down ads across a phone because it doesn’t require installing a separate ad-blocking app.

Open Android’s Settings and search for “Private DNS.” On many phones, you’ll find it under Network and Internet or a similar section. Choose the option for a private DNS provider hostname.

Enter a reputable ad-blocking DNS hostname, then save it. The exact menu names vary between Samsung, Pixel, Xiaomi, and other Android phones, so don’t panic if yours looks different.

A DNS-based blocker can stop many ad requests before they reach your phone. Some ads will still appear, especially inside apps that serve advertising in ways the DNS service can’t block.

What About Ad-Blocking Apps?

• Private DNS is the simple route, and once it’s configured, you mostly forget it’s there.

• A browser blocker makes the biggest difference if websites are the main problem.

• Some apps will still show ads because their advertising system doesn’t rely on connections the blocker can stop.

• Be suspicious of random ad-blocking apps from unknown developers. A tool promising to remove every ad doesn’t deserve unlimited access to your phone.

• Paying for an app you use constantly isn’t a bad deal, especially when the developer offers a proper ad-free version.

So, What Should You Do?

Start small. If one app is responsible, deal with that app. If websites are driving you mad, use an ad-blocking browser. If you want broader blocking without installing another app, Private DNS is worth trying.

And don’t chase the idea of a completely ad-free Android phone. Some ads will get through. That’s normal.

Ads get annoying fast. One pops up while you’re reading. Another appears inside an app you use every day.
