A few inside a free app are easy enough to ignore. Pop-ups that cover the screen while you’re trying to read something are a different story.

Start With Your Browser

If you use Chrome, open the browser settings and look for the site’s permissions. Pop-ups and redirects can be blocked there, which gets rid of a lot of the junk that suddenly opens another page.

You can also turn on Chrome’s built-in protection against intrusive ads. It won’t remove every ad you see. That’s actually a good thing because normal websites still need a way to pay for their content.

Try Private DNS

Android has another trick that many people overlook. Private DNS can block connections to some advertising networks before the ads load, so you don’t need to install a separate app.

Open your Android settings and search for “Private DNS.” Choose the option for a private DNS provider, then enter a trusted ad-blocking DNS hostname. Save it and browse normally.

The effect isn’t always dramatic. But when it works, pages feel cleaner because some ad requests never get through in the first place.

Use an Ad-Blocking App

• A good blocker should explain what it filters, rather than hiding behind vague promises about “total protection.”

• Battery use matters too, although a well-made blocker usually stays pretty quiet once it’s running.

• Be careful with random APK files from unfamiliar sites. Free isn’t worth it if the app itself is shady.

Stop Notifications That Look Like Ads

• That random shopping notification you never asked for? Turn it off at the source.

• If the alerts keep returning, look at recently installed apps because one of them may be responsible.

What Should You Actually Use?

For most people, browser settings plus Private DNS are enough. They’re simple, they don’t clutter your phone, and you don’t have another app sitting there all day.

If you want stronger blocking across apps, use a trusted ad blocker instead. Just don’t install five different blockers and expect your phone to magically become perfect. More isn’t always better here.

Ads are everywhere on a phone. A few inside a free app are easy enough to ignore.
