You’re doing something normal, then an ad suddenly covers the screen and wants you to tap somethin">

Pop-up ads on Android are annoying in a very specific way. You’re doing something normal, then an ad suddenly covers the screen and wants you to tap something you never asked for. Sometimes it happens inside an app. Sometimes it appears over everything else.

Start With the Browser

If pop-ups mainly appear while you’re browsing, check your browser first. Chrome has built-in controls for this, and they’re worth turning on.

Block Pop-Ups in Chrome

Open Chrome on your Android phone. Tap the three-dot menu, go to Settings, then find Site settings. Look for Pop-ups and redirects and make sure the option is blocked.

You should also check notifications from websites. Some sites push ad-heavy alerts long after you’ve forgotten visiting them, which is honestly one of the sneakier tricks.

• Website notifications you don’t recognize? Turn them off. The random “you won a prize” alert can disappear pretty quickly.

• Pop-ups and redirects should stay blocked, especially if you browse lots of unfamiliar sites.

Find the App Causing the Ads

This is where things get interesting. If an ad appears on your home screen or while you’re using another app, your browser probably isn’t the problem.

Think about what you installed recently. Free wallpaper apps are common suspects. So are odd-looking games or utility apps that seemed useful for five minutes.

Check Which Apps Can Appear on Top

Android gives certain apps permission to display content over other apps. Go to Settings and search for “Display over other apps” or “Appear on top.” The wording changes depending on your phone.

Look through the apps with that permission. If something you barely recognize has access, switch it off and see whether the ads stop.

Turn Off Annoying App Notifications

Some ads aren’t really pop-ups. They’re notifications dressed up like urgent messages. Your phone buzzes, you glance down, and there’s some ridiculous offer waiting for you.

Press and hold one of those notifications. Android should show which app sent it. Turn off notifications for that app if you don’t need them.

• A shopping app you barely use? Its promotional notifications probably don’t deserve a place on your lock screen.

• One suspicious notification is enough to investigate the app behind it, especially if the message appeared out of nowhere.

If the Ads Still Keep Appearing

Run a security scan using Google Play Protect. Open the Play Store, tap your profile picture, then choose Play Protect and run a scan.

If the ads continue, uninstall apps you don’t trust. Start with anything installed around the time the problem began. And don’t install another suspicious cleaner just because it promises to remove the first suspicious app.

Pop-up ads on Android are annoying in a very specific way.
