Some of it goes after your personal info. Some of it locks up your files so you can’t open them. And some of it just hangs out quietly in the background while you sit there wondering why your phone got so slow all of a sudden.

Viruses vs Worms

A virus has to attach itself to some other file or program to move around. It usually needs you to do something first, like opening an infected file. Once that happens, it can mess up your files or make the whole system act weird.

Worms work differently. They spread on their own, often by exploiting weak spots in connected devices. That’s what makes them such a pain on networks, because one infected machine can turn into the launchpad for a whole lot more trouble.

The difference really comes down to this. Viruses need a host file or program, so opening something infected is typically what kicks things off. Worms don’t wait around for you. They look for vulnerable systems and move on their own.

Trojans and Spyware

Trojans are sneaky on purpose. They dress up as something you actually want, maybe a handy app or a file you were looking for, while running something harmful underneath. The worst part is that you install it yourself.

Spyware is quieter about the whole thing. It watches what you do and gathers info without making a fuss. Some of it just tracks your browsing, and some of it goes after the sensitive stuff.

Ransomware and Adware

Ransomware is probably the one most people have heard of. It encrypts your files and then demands money to give them back. Everything is still sitting on your drive, but you can’t use any of it.

Adware sounds milder, but I wouldn’t call it harmless. It floods your device with ads you never asked for and can hijack your browser settings. Certain versions also keep tabs on what you’re up to.

Ransomware is the one to genuinely worry about though. Losing access to your own files is rough enough, and paying up doesn’t mean you’ll actually get everything back.

Other Terms Worth Knowing

Rootkits burrow deep into a system, which makes them really hard to catch with a normal scan.

Keyloggers keep a record of everything you type. Passwords are the obvious worry, but honestly anything you type can be valuable to someone with bad intentions.

Cryptojacking quietly borrows your device’s processing power to mine crypto for somebody else. Your laptop just seems oddly slow, and the person benefiting is nowhere in sight.

Why Bother Learning All This

Nobody expects you to become a security pro. Still, knowing the basic types helps you look at strange behavior and ask the right questions.

A bunch of pop ups out of nowhere suggests one kind of problem. Files that suddenly won’t open points to something much more serious. And if an app wants permissions it clearly has no reason to need, that’s worth a second thought.

Malware is really just a catch all name for software made to cause problems.
