But the app itself deserves a little suspicion. After all, you’re asking it to handle traffic that would otherwise travel directly through your connection, so blindly trusting a random VPN because its icon looks polished is a bad idea.

Start With the App Store Listing

Look at where the VPN comes from before installing it. On Android, check the developer name and read the app’s recent reviews. On iPhone, do the same thing, then look at the privacy details listed on the App Store page.

Check Who Owns It

Search the VPN’s company separately. A proper website should explain who operates the service and how users can contact them. If the developer feels impossible to identify, I’d skip the app. There are plenty of VPNs that are transparent about their business.

Read the Privacy Policy, At Least the Important Bit

This is the boring part. Still worth doing.

You don’t need to read twenty pages of legal language. Search the policy for words such as “logs” and “data retention.” Find out whether the service records your browsing activity or stores information that can identify you. A VPN that promises privacy but quietly keeps detailed usage records isn’t much of a privacy tool.

Free VPNs deserve extra scrutiny here. Running servers costs money, and if you’re not paying directly, it’s fair to ask how the company makes its money. Personally, I’d rather pay a reasonable fee than hand my internet activity to an unknown company.

Look for Independent Checks

A strong VPN doesn’t rely only on its own marketing. Independent security audits are a good sign because another party has actually examined parts of the service and its claims.

You can also check whether security researchers have reported serious problems with the app. One old bug isn’t necessarily a dealbreaker if it was fixed properly. Repeated security complaints are different.

Check the Permissions Before You Connect

Your VPN shouldn’t need access to things that have nothing to do with providing the service. Look through the permissions during installation and in your phone’s settings afterward.

• A request for access to your contacts? I’d question that immediately.

• Location access isn’t something I’d hand over casually, especially when the VPN doesn’t clearly explain why it needs it.

• Camera or microphone permissions are another red flag if they’re unrelated to a feature you actually use.

Test the App After Installation

Pay attention to what happens once the VPN is running. Does the connection behave normally? Does the app suddenly show strange ads? Does your phone start opening pages you didn’t request?

The biggest mistake is assuming that the word “VPN” automatically means safe. It doesn’t. The app is still software made by a company with its own incentives, and that company deserves to earn your trust rather than receive it for free.

If a VPN feels secretive before you’ve even connected to it, why give it the keys?

A VPN can make your internet connection feel more private.
