A message about an interview, then a small registration fee over UPI before they’ll “process” your application. The moment money shows up, slow down.

If you’ve been targeted in India, don’t waste hours arguing with the scammer. Report it through the right channel and keep your evidence. That makes the complaint much stronger.

Start With the Cyber Crime Portal

The easiest place to begin is the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. It’s meant for cybercrime in India, including online financial fraud, and you can file online. If you lost money, act now, not tomorrow. The transaction trail is only fresh for so long.

What Should You Keep?

Save the job ad, the messages, and screenshots of the payment request. Keep phone numbers and emails even after reporting. If the posting promised a big salary for almost no work, note that too. Most of all, hold onto the transaction reference. It gives investigators something real to follow.

Report the Money Transfer Quickly

Paid through UPI or a bank? Call your bank right away and report the fraud on the cybercrime helpline, 1930.

A lot of people delay this part because they feel embarrassed. Don’t. The scammer is counting on you sitting there wondering if it’s somehow your fault. It isn’t.

You Can Also Approach the Police

A local police station is another option, especially if money changed hands or you’ve been threatened or harassed. Bring your evidence and explain things plainly. And report the fake listing on the platform where you found it. That won’t replace the official complaint, but getting it taken down still matters.

Don’t Pay a “Recovery Agent”

After a scam, someone may message you offering to recover your money for a fee. Real authorities never ask for that. It’s a second scam, and it works because the person already knows you’ve been cheated.

So Where Should You Complain First?

Money involved? Call 1930, file on the portal, and if needed, go to the police with your evidence. Once you’ve saved what you need, stop replying. And never send another payment just to test if the offer is real.

A job should move you toward a paycheck, not a payment screen. If the first thing after an interview is a demand for money, why give them the benefit of the doubt?

A fake job offer can look surprisingly normal.
