Before you reply, take a minute and check who’s behind the profile. Scammers often make an account look normal at first glance, but the small details don’t always hold up.

Start With the Facebook Profile

Open the person’s profile and look beyond their profile picture. Check when the account was created. A very new profile that suddenly sends you a message about money or an amazing deal deserves extra caution.

Then look through their photos. Do they seem genuine, or were several pictures uploaded within a short period? Reverse image search can also show whether the profile photo belongs to someone else. That’s a big red flag.

Look at Their Activity

A real person’s Facebook history usually has some messiness. Old posts. Comments from friends. Random birthday wishes. Scammers often don’t have much of that.

• Almost no older activity, which feels odd if the account claims to be someone’s long-time profile.

• Comments look copied or strangely generic. One-word replies everywhere aren’t exactly proof of a scam, but they don’t inspire confidence either.

• The profile suddenly starts promoting a product or asking people for money, especially after very little normal activity.

Check What They’re Asking For

The message itself can tell you plenty. If someone you’ve never met asks for your OTP, password, bank details, or payment, stop there. Facebook doesn’t need your password through a chat message, and a genuine friend shouldn’t need your banking information either.

And don’t let urgency push you into acting. “Send it right now” is a favorite trick because it gives you less time to think.

What to Do if You Think It’s a Scam

• Screenshot the conversation first. Keep the details before the account disappears.

• Report the profile through Facebook’s reporting options, particularly if it’s pretending to be another person.

• Block the account afterward. There’s really no prize for keeping a suspicious stranger in your inbox.

Trust the Weird Feeling

You don’t need courtroom-level evidence before deciding not to trust a Facebook account. If the profile feels strange, the story keeps changing, or the person is pushing you to act quickly, that’s enough reason to step back.

Got a strange message on Facebook?
