You check your balance while sitting on the sofa, move money in seconds, and pay a bill without thinking twice. That convenience is exactly what fraudsters try to exploit. They don’t always need to break into a bank’s system. Sometimes, they just need you to trust the wrong message.

Phishing and Fake Banking Messages

Phishing is one of the oldest tricks in digital banking, but it still works because the messages look familiar. You might get an email claiming your account has been blocked. Or a text tells you to update your KYC details through a link. The page looks like your bank’s website, so you enter your login details. Game over.

Smishing follows the same idea through SMS. Vishing takes it to phone calls. A caller may claim to be from your bank and create pressure by saying there’s suspicious activity on your account. And because people tend to panic when money is mentioned, they often stop checking whether the caller is genuine.

The Fake Link Problem

Never assume a message is safe just because it uses your bank’s logo or knows your name. Check the bank’s official app or website yourself instead of using the link you received. Honestly, this is one area where being slightly suspicious is a good habit.

UPI and Payment App Frauds

UPI has made everyday payments ridiculously easy. Fraudsters noticed. A common scam involves someone saying they’re sending you money and asking you to approve a request or enter your UPI PIN. But the PIN authorizes money leaving your account, not money coming into it.

• A payment request that supposedly “receives” money should immediately make you pause, because receiving money doesn’t require your UPI PIN.

• Fake customer support is especially annoying. The number looks convincing, but the person on the other end is after your banking details.

• QR codes aren’t magical shortcuts. Scan one only when you know exactly what payment you’re approving.

Card, Malware, and Social Engineering Fraud

Card fraud happens when criminals get hold of your card information and use it for unauthorized purchases. Malware takes a different route by infecting your phone or computer and attempting to steal information in the background.

Then there’s social engineering, which is arguably the most dangerous because the criminal doesn’t have to defeat the technology. They manipulate you instead. A fake bank employee may ask for an OTP. Another scammer may pretend to be a friend who needs an urgent payment.

Your banking app can feel incredibly safe.
