It’s that little test asking you to prove you’re human. Sometimes you type ">

CAPTCHA stands for “Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart.” The name sounds far more complicated than the thing itself. The basic idea is simple: a website wants to stop automated bots from pretending to be real people.

Why Do Websites Use CAPTCHAs?

Bots are fast. A script can create accounts or send thousands of requests much quicker than a person sitting at a laptop. That becomes a problem when someone is trying to spam a form or abuse an online service.

So a CAPTCHA adds a small speed bump. A person solves it and continues. A basic bot gets stuck because it doesn’t understand the challenge as easily.

And honestly, this is one security feature I don’t mind. A CAPTCHA that takes two seconds is a fair trade if it keeps a website from being flooded with junk.

What Does a CAPTCHA Check?

Older CAPTCHAs often showed distorted text. You had to read the characters and enter them into a box, even though someone had apparently decided that making the letters look like they were melting was a good security idea.

Modern systems are smarter. A CAPTCHA may ask you to identify something in an image. Another version watches how you interact with the page and decides whether your behaviour looks human.

• Distorted text, which was common on older websites and was often harder for people than it needed to be.

• Image challenges can ask you to spot something specific, and the trick is that the computer has trouble making the same visual judgment.

• Invisible checks run quietly in the background, so you sometimes pass without even noticing a CAPTCHA happened.

Different Types of CAPTCHA

Not every CAPTCHA works the same way. Some are obvious. Others are designed to stay out of your way.

Text and Image CAPTCHAs

Text CAPTCHAs ask you to enter characters shown in an image. Image CAPTCHAs usually involve clicking certain parts of a picture. They became popular because computers struggled with visual recognition, at least compared with the average person.

But technology moved on. Modern image recognition is pretty good, which means old-school CAPTCHAs aren’t nearly as impressive as they once were.

Behaviour-Based CAPTCHAs

This approach is much less annoying. The system looks at how you use the page rather than forcing you to solve a puzzle every time.

A normal person usually moves a mouse in a slightly messy way. Bots tend to behave differently. The website can use those signals to decide whether another check is needed.

• A quick click or tap may be enough when your activity looks normal.

• Suspicious behaviour triggers more checking, which is annoying when you’re legitimate, but useful when a bot is hammering the site.

Are CAPTCHAs Still Useful?

Yes. They aren’t perfect, though. Attackers have found ways around many older CAPTCHA systems, including automated solving services and tools that imitate human behaviour.

Accessibility is another issue. A visual CAPTCHA can be frustrating for someone who can’t see the image clearly. Audio versions exist, but those aren’t always easy either.

And if a website still makes you identify twelve blurry bicycles before every login, maybe the bot isn’t the biggest problem there.

CAPTCHA stands for “Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart.” The name sounds far more complicated…

[31

post-3820","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-learn
["GET
