Phones connect through it. Laptops do too. That quiet">

Your router is sitting quietly in the corner, blinking away while everything else in the house uses it. Phones connect through it. Laptops do too. That quiet little box is also one of the main doors into your network.

Outdated Router Software Creates Trouble

Router firmware needs updates for a reason. Manufacturers release them when they find security flaws or discover a better way to block attacks. The problem is that people often install a router and then forget it exists.

And an old router can keep running for years with the same weak software. Attackers look for known flaws because they don’t need to guess what they’re dealing with. They already know where the cracks are.

Default Passwords Are an Easy Target

• A weak admin password is especially risky because it protects the router’s control panel, not just the Wi-Fi connection.

• Firmware that hasn’t been updated in years is a problem waiting quietly in the background, even if your internet feels perfectly normal.

Weak Wi-Fi Security Can Expose the Network

Your Wi-Fi password matters. A short or predictable one gives an unwanted visitor more room to try guessing it, particularly if they’re physically close to your home.

Routers Can Also Be Targets for Malware

A compromised router can cause problems without making a lot of noise. Malware may change settings or redirect users toward fake websites. And because the router sits between your devices and the internet, one compromise can affect more than one device.

This is why I wouldn’t buy a suspiciously cheap router from an unknown brand just to save a little money. Security support matters more than getting another few hundred rupees off the price.

Unsafe Remote Access

Remote administration is convenient. You can manage the router without being at home. But leaving that feature exposed to the internet gives attackers another door to knock on.

• Remote management should stay off unless you genuinely need it. Most home users don’t.

• Guest Wi-Fi is worth using, especially when visitors need internet access but don’t need to interact with your personal devices.

Poor Router Settings Add Another Layer of Risk

Some security problems come from settings that were never changed after setup. UPnP is one example. It can make device connections easier, but it also gives applications more freedom to request network access.

Another concern is DNS. If someone changes your router’s DNS settings without your knowledge, websites can be redirected somewhere they shouldn’t go. You might still see a familiar-looking page, which is exactly what makes this kind of attack unpleasant.

The trick is to treat the router like any other important piece of technology. Update it. Change the default admin password. Check its settings occasionally. And if the manufacturer has stopped providing security updates altogether, replacing it is usually smarter than hoping nothing happens.

Your router is sitting quietly in the corner, blinking away while everything else in the house uses it.
