Before it connects, something needs to ask DNS for an answer. That request is called a DNS query. Simple enough.

But DNS queries aren’t all doing the same job. Some ask for an IP address. Others ask where email should go. Some are sent by your device to a resolver, while others travel deeper through the DNS system to find an answer.

The Main Types of DNS Queries

The easiest way to understand DNS queries is to look at what the requester wants from the DNS system. There are three main types you’ll see: recursive queries, iterative queries, and non-recursive queries.

Recursive DNS Query

A recursive query basically says, “Give me the answer.” Your device usually sends this kind of query to a recursive DNS resolver. The resolver then does the searching for you, contacting other DNS servers until it finds the information it needs.

Iterative DNS Query

An iterative query works differently. The DNS server doesn’t promise to find the final answer. Instead, it gives the best information it has, often pointing the requester toward another DNS server.

Imagine asking someone for an address and getting told, “I don’t have the exact location, but ask that person over there.” You keep moving through the chain until you reach the server that knows.

Non-Recursive DNS Queries

A non-recursive query happens when the DNS server already knows the answer. There’s no need for it to search elsewhere.

This often happens because the information is already stored in the resolver’s cache. If you recently visited the same site, the resolver may still have its DNS record available, so the response feels almost instant.

Raj noticed this without really thinking about DNS. After restarting his laptop, he stopped reopening the same five tabs every morning because the sites loaded quickly once he started browsing again. Nothing exciting. DNS was simply getting out of his way.

DNS Queries by Record Type

There’s another useful way to look at DNS queries. Instead of asking how the query travels, you can ask what type of DNS record it wants.

• An A query asks for an IPv4 address. That’s the classic website lookup most people picture.

• An AAAA query requests an IPv6 address, which matters as more networks rely on IPv6.

• MX queries deal with email delivery. They tell mail systems where messages for a domain should be sent, which is quietly important.

• TXT queries retrieve text stored in DNS. They’re often used for domain verification or email security, and there’s more going on there than the name suggests.

• NS queries identify the authoritative name servers for a domain. Handy when DNS delegation needs to be understood.

Why These Query Types Matter

The difference matters because DNS isn’t one giant directory sitting somewhere on the internet. It’s a distributed system, and each query plays a role in finding or confirming information.

Recursive queries focus on getting an answer for the client. Iterative queries help DNS servers work their way through the hierarchy. Non-recursive queries save time when the answer is already available.

And honestly, the recursive model is the part worth remembering first. It explains why your device can ask one resolver a simple question while that resolver handles the complicated DNS work somewhere else.

Your browser doesn’t magically know where a website lives.
