It feels simple. Underneath that quick exchange, though, your browser is constantly sending info">

You type a website address, hit enter, page shows up. Feels simple enough. Underneath that quick exchange though, your browser’s constantly sending information back and forth across the internet, and encryption’s what keeps that info from just sitting there in plain sight.

HTTPS Is Where You Notice It

Check the address bar next time you’re on a website. Starts with HTTPS, encryption’s protecting the connection between your browser and the site. That extra S actually matters.

HTTPS runs on TLS, which sets up a protected connection once your browser and the site agree on how they’re going to talk. During that setup they establish encryption keys, and after that everything moving between them stays protected.

What Gets Protected?

Think about logging into your bank. You don’t want your password traveling across the network as plain readable text. Same goes for anything you type into an online checkout, or send through a private message.

Encryption protects the actual contents of that traffic while it’s moving between your device and the site. It also helps stop someone else on the same network from casually reading whatever you’re sending.

Login details stay scrambled during transmission, exactly what you want on public Wi-Fi. Online forms get the same protection, a stranger watching the connection shouldn’t just see what you typed. Private messages too, the network doesn’t get to read them as plain text.

Encryption Also Helps Prove You’re Talking to the Right Website

There’s a part people tend to overlook. HTTPS isn’t just about hiding information. TLS certificates also help your browser confirm it’s actually connecting to the site it thinks it is.

Your browser checks the certificate during that secure setup process. Something looks off, a certificate problem, the browser warns you before you go any further. Worth taking that warning seriously when it shows up.

But encryption doesn’t magically make a website trustworthy. A scam site can absolutely run HTTPS too. Connection’s encrypted, sure, while whoever’s running the site is still trying to trick you. Important distinction to hold onto.

What Happens on Public Wi-Fi?

This is where encrypted browsing really earns its place. Sitting in a café, same network as a bunch of strangers, browser sending requests back and forth the whole time.

No encryption, intercepted traffic’s far more exposed. With HTTPS, the actual contents stay encrypted, so someone watching the network can’t just read the data as it travels past.

Encryption Has Limits

Your browsing isn’t completely invisible just because HTTPS is running. The network might still figure out your device’s talking to a particular service, even if the protected connection hides what’s actually being exchanged.

It also won’t protect a device that’s already compromised. Malicious software sitting on your computer, watching what you type, the secure connection isn’t going to save you there.

You type a website address, hit enter, page shows up.
