The basic job is still the same. Move a m">

ESMTP, short for Extended SMTP, is an updated version of the protocol used to send email. Core job’s the same, moving a message from one mail server to another. What it adds is extra ability, letting servers tell each other what features they support before the actual transfer starts.

How It Works

When two servers connect, the receiving one sends a greeting, and the sender responds with EHLO instead of the older HELO. That’s the signal, basically saying “I speak ESMTP.”

Receiving server replies with whatever extensions it supports. Sender uses those during the rest of the conversation, skips whatever isn’t supported. Quick negotiation, no setup screen involved.

The Extensions That Matter

AUTH is the big one, used for authenticated sending when a client needs to prove who it is. STARTTLS adds encryption when both sides support it. SIZE tells the sender the biggest message the server will accept. 8BITMIME lets messages carry 8-bit characters without forcing older encoding rules.

Why It Matters

Plain SMTP still sits underneath everything, but modern email needs more than that original protocol offered. ESMTP gives servers a standard way to add these capabilities without replacing SMTP entirely.

Authentication’s a good example, a server advertises its method, the client identifies itself before sending anything. Encryption too, with STARTTLS the connection moves from a normal session into an encrypted one.

ESMTP vs SMTP

ESMTP extends SMTP rather than replacing it. SMTP’s the basic framework, ESMTP adds the extensions on top that let servers negotiate extra features.

EHLO is the giveaway, traditional SMTP uses HELO, ESMTP uses EHLO to kick off the extended session, then the server lists what it can handle from there.

ESMTP, short for Extended SMTP, is an updated version of the protocol used to send email.
