Maybe you’ve noticed the little padlock too. SSL is part of what makes that happen. It protects the connection between your browser and a website so that information moving between them isn’t sitting there in plain view.

What SSL Actually Does

SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer. It’s an older name for the technology that encrypts data sent between two points. Today, websites use TLS, or Transport Layer Security, which replaced SSL a long time ago. People still say “SSL certificate” because the name stuck.

Encryption Is the Big Part

Encryption is what keeps the actual information private. Your browser turns readable data into encrypted data before sending it. The website then turns it back into something readable after receiving it.

What Is an SSL Certificate?

An SSL certificate is basically a digital credential for a website. It helps the browser confirm that it’s connecting to the website it was meant to reach. The certificate is issued by a trusted Certificate Authority, which verifies certain details before approving it.

SSL vs TLS

This naming gets confusing. SSL is technically obsolete. TLS is the modern protocol used to secure websites. So when someone says a website “uses SSL,” they usually mean it has an HTTPS connection protected with TLS.

Honestly, “SSL” is one of those tech terms that survived even after the technology itself moved on. People understand it. Businesses still use it. And everyone knows roughly what it means.

Why Websites Need SSL

Raj once spent a few minutes staring at a checkout page because the browser showed a security warning. He had been trying to buy a phone case while eating lunch at his desk. He closed the tab instead of entering his card details.

That was a sensible move. SSL is especially important when a website handles information that shouldn’t be exposed during transmission. Login details are an obvious example. Payment information is another.

But there’s another reason SSL matters. Search engines and browsers expect websites to use secure connections, and visitors have become used to seeing HTTPS. A security warning makes people leave quickly.

How SSL Works in the Background

When you visit an HTTPS website, your browser first establishes a secure connection with the server. During this process, the server presents its certificate. The browser checks whether the certificate is valid and trusted.

Once the connection is established, encryption protects the data moving between you and the website. The technical details get pretty deep, involving cryptographic keys and a TLS handshake, but you don’t need to understand all of that to use HTTPS safely.

The useful part is simple. You open the site. The secure connection gets negotiated. Then you carry on.

SSL isn’t a magic stamp that makes every website honest. It secures the connection. That distinction matters, especially when a convincing fake website also has HTTPS.

Still, I’d rather see that padlock than an unsecured connection any day. After a while, you stop noticing it, which is probably the best compliment a security feature can get.

You’ve probably seen “HTTPS” sitting in your browser’s address bar.
