That sounds obvious, but people still treat a strong password like it’s a locked front door with no windows.

Your Password Isn’t Enough Anymore

A password protects your account only as long as nobody else knows it. And passwords get exposed in plenty of boring ways. A website gets hacked. Someone guesses an old password. You enter your details on a fake login page without noticing.

Two-factor authentication, usually called 2FA, asks for a second proof of identity after your password. That proof could come from your phone or another device you already control.

That Extra Step Matters

• A code from an authenticator app, which takes a few seconds and soon feels routine.

• Your phone may confirm the login, although relying only on text messages isn’t my favourite option because phone numbers can sometimes be targeted.

• A physical security key is even harder to casually steal, especially when it’s sitting beside your laptop rather than floating around in a text message.

It Protects More Than You Think

Your email account deserves special attention. If someone gets into it, they may find password-reset emails for other accounts. That’s where one stolen password can turn into a much bigger headache.

2FA puts another checkpoint there.

Does 2FA Make Logging In Annoying?

A little, at first.

You enter your password and then confirm it’s really you. That extra moment can feel irritating when you’re already in a hurry, especially if your phone isn’t beside you.

But after using it regularly, you barely notice. And I’d take five extra seconds over spending an afternoon trying to recover an account someone else has taken over.

Many services also let you mark a trusted device so you don’t have to complete the second step every single time. That’s where 2FA stops feeling like a chore.

Which Accounts Should Get 2FA?

Start with the accounts that could cause the biggest mess if someone else got inside. Your main email should be near the top.

• Your banking account deserves the extra barrier, even if the bank already uses other security checks.

• Social media matters too, particularly if you use it for work or keep private conversations there.

• Cloud storage is easy to forget, but losing access to your stored files can be a real pain.

And don’t wait until after a suspicious login to enable it. Set it up while everything is normal. Keep your recovery codes somewhere safe too, because being locked out of your own account isn’t much fun either.

Passwords still matter. Use strong ones and keep them unique.

Passwords are easy to steal.
