Think of it as the main house for your site's files, database, images, and code. A CDN is differ">

A web host is where your website actually lives, the main home for its files, database, images, code. A CDN’s different, sits closer to visitors and delivers cached content from servers spread across locations.

Your Host Is The Main Home

Someone opens your site, their browser reaches a server storing it, usually in one data centre. Site hosted in Mumbai, someone in Delhi still makes that trip. Someone in London’s got a much longer journey. Works fine, but distance matters, especially with bigger pages.

The host also handles the behind-the-scenes stuff, processing requests, connecting to the database, running whatever the site depends on.

Where The CDN Comes In

Doesn’t replace your host, works alongside it. Stores copies of content that doesn’t need generating fresh every time. Visitor gets it from a nearby CDN server instead of the whole trip back to your main host.

Feels quicker, sometimes noticeably so. Your host stays the original source, CDN’s more like a nearby delivery point. Images and static files come from somewhere closer, cutting travel distance. Dynamic requests still need the main server a lot of the time though, CDN doesn’t make everything local.

What You Actually Notice

Site hosted in one country, international visitors complain about slow loads while it feels fine locally, that’s usually exactly this. Add a CDN, overseas visitors start getting cached content from servers nearer them. Site itself wasn’t rebuilt, just the delivery changed.

Hosting Does A Lot More

This is where people mix things up. A CDN’s mainly about delivering content efficiently. Your host’s got the bigger job, running the app, storing the database, handling requests that can’t just come from a cached copy. CDN doesn’t take any of that over.

Why Sites Often Use Both

Good setup has both together. Host keeps the site running, CDN handles cached content closer to users, takes pressure off the main server. Helps with traffic spikes too, thousands hitting the same cached image get served without every request hitting the origin.

Many CDNs add security too, filtering unwanted traffic before it reaches the origin.

Small personal site with modest traffic, hosting alone’s probably fine. Visitors spread across regions, or lots of static content, a CDN starts making a lot more sense.

Host is where the site lives. CDN’s how much of it gets delivered closer to the people asking for it.

A web host is where your website actually lives, the main home for its files, database, images, code.
