Streaming doesn't stick to one protocol for everything, and the choice depends on what kind of stream you're watching and how the ">

TCP stands for Transmission Control Protocol. UDP stands for User Datagram Protocol. They handle data in very different ways, and that difference matters when you’re trying to watch a video without staring at a loading circle.

Why TCP Works for Streaming

TCP is built around reliability. If some data gets lost while traveling across the internet, TCP notices and asks for it again. It also makes sure data arrives in the right order before your device uses it.

That sounds perfect for video. And for many streaming services, it has worked very well.

What Happens When Data Gets Lost?

Imagine you’re watching a football match and one tiny piece of video goes missing. With TCP, the missing data gets requested again. Your stream may pause briefly while your device waits.

That’s usually acceptable for on-demand video because the player has a buffer. It can quietly store some content ahead of where you’re watching, so a small network hiccup doesn’t immediately ruin playback.

Where UDP Makes Sense

UDP takes a much more relaxed approach. It sends data without setting up the same kind of connection and doesn’t wait around to make sure every packet arrives.

• Speed matters more here. A slightly imperfect frame is often preferable to freezing the entire conversation.

• TCP’s reliability is useful for stored video, especially when the player has enough buffer to hide small network problems.

• UDP doesn’t retransmit lost packets by itself, which sounds harsh until you’re dealing with something that needs to happen right now.

So What Does Netflix-Style Streaming Use?

This gets a little more interesting because modern streaming isn’t simply a TCP-versus-UDP decision.

Many web-based streaming services use HTTP-based delivery over TCP. But newer systems can use HTTP/3, which runs over QUIC. QUIC itself uses UDP underneath while adding features that provide reliable, secure data delivery.

So seeing UDP underneath doesn’t automatically mean the stream is willing to lose everything. The higher-level protocol can add reliability while still taking advantage of UDP’s design.

Raj’s Friday Night Stream

Raj was watching a show on his laptop one Friday night while his Wi-Fi was acting up. The video paused once, then recovered after a few seconds. He blamed the streaming service and restarted the router, even though his phone was already struggling to load a news page.

That’s the part people often miss. The protocol matters, but buffering and the entire network path matter too.

Which One Is Better?

Neither TCP nor UDP is simply “the streaming protocol.” TCP fits situations where getting every piece of data correctly matters. UDP fits situations where staying current matters more than recovering every lost packet.

And honestly, I like the logic behind UDP for truly live traffic. If you’re watching something happening right now, waiting for yesterday’s missing packet feels pointless.

For ordinary on-demand streaming, TCP-based delivery remains perfectly practical, while newer approaches such as QUIC over UDP show that the old choice isn’t really a simple two-box decision anymore.

TCP stands for Transmission Control Protocol.
