Think of your home, an office floor, or a computer lab.">

A LAN, short for local area network, is simply a network connecting devices within a limited area. Think of your home, an office floor, a computer lab. Devices talk to each other through the network instead of working as completely separate machines.

How Does a LAN Work?

Basic idea’s simple. Devices connect to a central network device, usually a router or switch. Connection happens through Wi-Fi, or Ethernet cable for a wired setup.

Your computer needs to talk to another device on the same network, the LAN gives that traffic a path. The router might also connect your LAN to the internet, but those are two different things, an important distinction. A LAN can exist without any internet connection at all.

LAN and Wi-Fi Aren’t the Same Thing

People throw these terms around like they mean the same thing. They don’t. Wi-Fi is just a way devices connect wirelessly. A LAN describes the local network those devices belong to.

You could have a wired LAN in an office running Ethernet cables. You could have a wireless LAN at home. Both are LANs, just different ways of connecting devices.

What Is a LAN Used For?

Becomes useful once several devices need to communicate or share resources. In an office, a computer accesses a shared printer over the local network. At home, your laptop talks to a smart TV without that traffic going anywhere near the internet.

LANs usually feel quick since nearby devices don’t need to make a long trip through outside networks just to talk to each other. Shared printers are the classic example, especially in offices where nobody wants another cable snaking across a desk. File sharing between local computers too, depending on the OS and permissions. Gaming over a local connection can feel noticeably faster since devices communicate directly across the network.

LAN vs WAN

A LAN covers a small area. A WAN, wide area network, connects networks across much larger distances.

Your home network’s a LAN. A company linking offices in Mumbai and London, that’s a WAN. The internet itself is bigger than either, connecting networks across the whole world.

The boundary isn’t really about a specific number of metres, more about how the network’s organized and what area it serves.

Why LANs Still Matter

One of those technologies you probably don’t think about until something breaks. But it sits underneath a huge amount of everyday connectivity.

For a home or small office, a properly set up LAN gives your devices a private local space to talk to each other. You don’t need to understand every networking setting, just what’s actually happening. Your devices are talking to each other nearby. The internet’s a separate connection beyond that. Once that split makes sense, networking terms stop feeling so mysterious.

A LAN, short for local area network, is simply a network connecting devices within a limited area.
