Now a creator with a decent laptop can make something that looks real enough t">

Creating a deepfake once felt like a strange corner of the internet. Today a creator with a laptop can produce something that looks real enough to fool people for a few seconds. The space between ” fake” and “wait did they actually say that?” is where legal trouble begins.

The Face Isn’t Automatically Yours to Use

A person’s face, voice or likeness can be protected by law even if you find the source online. Copyright is one issue. Privacy and publicity rights can be another depending on where the person lives and how you use the result.

Consent becomes more important when money is involved. A parody posted for fun is in a legal setting than a fake endorsement that guides viewers to a product page. Telling deepfake is AI-generated does not remove the problem.

The Big Risk: Making Someone Appear to Endorse You

Picture making a video that makes a famous actor appear to recommend your editing course. The actor never recorded it. You add a disclaimer somewhere below the video.

That disclaimer is not a shield. If the whole post gives viewers an impression you could still face a claim. Advertising rules can also apply when deepfake is used to sell something.

Defamation Gets Serious Fast

A deepfake can put words into someone’s mouth or show them doing something they never did. If viewers believe the claim and it harms that person’s reputation defamation law may apply.

Context matters a lot here. A labeled parody is different, from a realistic clip shown as genuine. So before posting ask what an ordinary viewer would believe after seeing it without any explanation.

Keep Your Deepfakes on Safer Ground

• A clear parody label helps. Do not hide it in tiny text where nobody will see it.

• If the person never agreed to the use stop there. Changing the deepfake voice while keeping the identity does not magically solve the issue.

• Commercial use deserves caution especially if the video makes someone appear to support a product or service.

• Keep records of permissions and licenses. You will be glad you did if someone later asks how the content was made.

The Law Is Moving Too

Deepfake rules change quickly and the exact answer depends on the country and sometimes the state or province involved. New laws target forms of synthetic media so advice that was accurate last year can become outdated.

That means creators should not treat “AI-generated” as a category that settles everything. It does not. The real question is what you made, whose identity you used how you presented it and what happened because people believed it.

Creating a deepfake once felt like a strange corner of the internet.
