That gap is the problem. Deepfake online harassment happens when someone uses AI to create">

A fake video can be made in a few seconds. Fixing the damage it causes takes longer. That difference in time is where the real problem lies. Deepfake online harassment happens when someone uses intelligence to create or change media. The goal is to embarrass, threaten, shame or target another person.

Why Deepfakes Hurt So Much

Here’s the truth: people usually believe what they see without stopping to think. A believable fake can spread fast in a group chat before the person in the video even knows it’s there. Once copies start spreading deleting the post doesn’t stop the damage. The image or video is already else.

The pain feels real even if the video is fake. One person might stop going to school. Another might stop sharing things. At work things can get awkward and uncomfortable.

The Harassment Part

Deepfakes become harassment when they’re used to humiliate or scare someone. Sexual deepfakes are especially damaging because the person in the video never agreed to it in the place.

• A fake image shared in a group can still escape. Someone might save it before the group deletes it.

• Sexual content is especially harmful—especially when a face is put on a body that’s n’t real or on someone else entirely.

• A threat made with a voice recording can feel terrifying in the moment. That’s especially true when the voice sounds like someone the person knows.

Don’t Feed the Fire

If you find a deepfake targeting you or someone you know save proof before doing anything. Try to keep the link. Take screenshots. Note the time and place you found the content.

Then report the content to the platform. If the material involves threats, sexual abuse or serious harm contacting law enforcement or a trusted support group is a good step.

Don’t share the fake just to show it’s fake. It sounds obvious. People still do it. Every new share gives the content another chance to spread.

Why Prevention Still Matters

Platforms have a responsibility. Users shouldn’t have to act like detectives every time a suspicious video shows up.

Small changes in everyday habits matter too. Be careful, about sharing recordings of your face or voice with strangers. Always double-check videos that seem strange or unexpected.. If a friend appears in something disturbing ask them quietly instead of jumping into public comments.

A fake video can be made in a few seconds.
