You see a face that looks familiar the lighting feels right. Your brain fills in the rest before you even think about checking it.

Start With the Face

Look at the person’s face but don’t stare only at the eyes. Deepfake tools have become much better so the obvious mistakes are often gone. Small details still give them away though.

Watch the Weird Little Details

Skin can look too smooth like a photo that has been pushed through a beauty filter. Teeth may have shapes. Hair can melt into the background around the edges. Glasses sometimes behave oddly too especially where the frames meet the skin.

Then check the face against the rest of the image. Does the lighting on the face match the room? Are shadows falling in the direction? If the person looks sharply edited while the background has texture pause there.

• Odd eyes or teeth are worth a look especially if one side of the face seems slightly different from the other.

• Hair that looks painted than photographed is a useful warning sign though messy compression can create a similar effect.

• The background feels strangely soft or warped. Look near the edges of the person because that’s where editing mistakes often hide.

Check the Image, Not Just the Person

A common mistake is deciding whether an image is fake based on the face. Don’t. The whole picture matters.

Look at objects near the person. A hand may have a shape. A watch might have markings that don’t make sense. Text on a sign can look almost readable while being nonsense. Deepfake systems have improved quickly. Tiny inconsistencies still slip through.

Zooming in can help. You don’t need software. Open the image at a size and inspect the areas that look suspicious. Just remember that a low-quality original can also look strange after you zoom in so don’t treat every edge as proof.

Ask Where It Came From

Before sharing an image check its source. Reverse image search can show whether the same picture appeared else earlier. A search result doesn’t automatically prove the image is fake. It can reveal an older version or a completely different context.

Use Detection Tools Carefully

There are tools that scan images for signs of AI generation or manipulation. They’re useful, as an opinion. They shouldn’t be treated like a judge.

Detection systems can make mistakes because image quality changes when a file is compressed, resized or saved again. A tool saying ” AI” doesn’t settle the question. The same goes for a tool saying an image looks real.

So use the result alongside what you can see yourself. If the image has details and its source is unclear that’s a stronger reason to doubt it than one automated score.

Trust Your Pause

The useful skill here is simply slowing down. Deepfakes work partly because people react before checking.

Look at the face. Check the surrounding objects. Find the source if you can. Then ask yourself whether the image makes sense as a whole.

You don’t need to become a forensics expert. You just need to stop giving an image the benefit of the doubt because it looks convincing.

A deepfake can look completely normal at glance.
