The request sounds like something your manager might send before lunch. Then someone sends money to the account and suddenly a five-minute email has turned into a big problem.

Business email compromise or BEC works because attackers don’t always have to break into a system. Sometimes they just need to make a message seem real. They might pretend to be an executive, a supplier or a customer. The goal is usually the same: get someone to send money or private information without stopping to think.

Why These Scams Feel So Real

The smart part is often the timing. An attacker might know that a payment is coming or that a supplier changed bank details. They use that bit of truth to create pressure.. Because the request matches what people expect the signs of a problem can be easy to miss.

A fake email can also come from an address that looks the same. One letter is different. A familiar name appears at the top. You look at it while doing six things and move on.

Look for the Small Differences

• A new bank account mentioned in a looking invoice needs a second look especially if the request comes by email.

• Urgency is the part. “Pay this today” adds pressure and pressure makes people skip the steps.

• Strange words, endings or a message that feels slightly wrong can matter, even if the rest looks familiar.

Create a Habit of Checking

The best habit is simple: check payment requests using a different way. If a supplier sends bank details call a number you already have in your records. Don’t use the number in the message.

This works well because it takes control away from the attacker. The key is to make checking a thing not something people do only when an email looks clearly fake.

Make the Process Hard to Skip

• Have two people approve payments. It adds a delay but that delay is exactly what you want when money is leaving the company.

• Use -factor authentication on email accounts especially those that deal with invoices or payments. A password is easy to steal.

Train People Without Scaring Them

Security training doesn’t have to be a talk. Show employees examples and explain what to do when something feels wrong. Most people don’t want to make a mistake. They want to finish their work.

Also let them know it’s okay to pause a payment. That’s important. If employees think asking a person a question will get them in trouble an attacker can use that fear.

What to Do After a Suspicious Request

Don’t just delete the message. Hope it goes away. Report it so the right people can check if others saw it too.

If money was sent act fast. Call the bank or payment provider and your internal security team. Keep the emails and transaction details. The boring proof can be very helpful later.

Honestly the best protection, against business email compromise isn’t a security tool. It’s a company where people are allowed to stop, check and ask one question before the money moves.

The email seems okay.
