Forgetting a password happens more often than people admit. Especially with your UAN account. You log in once to check your EPF details, then months pass, and suddenly that password is gone from memory.
The good news is that changing your UAN password is usually a quick job. No long forms. No office visit. Just a few minutes and you’re done.
First, Know What UAN Is
Your Universal Account Number, usually called UAN, connects your EPF accounts across jobs. If you’ve changed employers before, you’ve probably used it without thinking much about it.
Because it gives access to important financial information, keeping the password updated is a smart habit. I actually think people wait far too long before changing old passwords. One strong update every so often is easier than dealing with account issues later.
Changing Your UAN Password When You Remember the Old One
If you can still log in, the process is straightforward.
• Sign in to the EPFO member portal using your UAN and current password, which is the only part that usually trips people up
• Once you’re inside, look for the account or password settings section. The wording changes occasionally, but it’s not hidden
• Your current password goes in first. Then enter the new one and confirm it, because nobody enjoys getting locked out by a typing mistake
After saving the change, use the new password the next time you log in. That’s really all there is to it.
Picking a Better Password
Don’t use your name followed by your birth year. People still do this. A lot.
Choose something longer. Mix letters and numbers. Add a special character if the portal allows it. The best password is usually the one that’s hard for others to guess but easy enough for you to remember without writing it on a sticky note.
What If You’ve Forgotten the Password?
This is where most people end up. On the EPFO login page, click the “Forgot Password” option. You’ll be asked to verify your identity using your registered mobile number linked with the UAN account.
• An OTP arrives on your phone. Usually within seconds, though sometimes you’ll stare at the screen longer than you’d like
• After verification, the portal lets you create a fresh password and move on with your day
Make sure the mobile number connected to your UAN is active. Without access to that number, password recovery becomes much more annoying.
A Small Thing That Saves Future Headaches
Meera changed her UAN password after realizing she kept opening the same five tabs every morning just to find login details she’d forgotten. She saved the new one in a password manager and stopped thinking about it.
That’s the real goal. Not security lectures. Just removing one more little annoyance from your week.
Common Problems During Password Reset
Sometimes the OTP doesn’t arrive immediately. Wait a few minutes before trying again. Network delays happen.
Another issue is an outdated mobile number. If the registered number is no longer yours, you’ll need to update your contact details through the proper EPFO process before resetting the password.
And if the portal feels slow, don’t panic. Government websites occasionally have their own sense of timing.
