Deepfake faces can look surprisingly real. A deepfake face blinks. It smiles. Its lips seem to match the words. Yet something can feel off especially if you stop watching the video as a whole and inspect the deepfake face itself.
Start With the Face
Look at the eyes first. Deepfake software often struggles with details around the eyelids or pupils. A blink may look too quick. The eyes might not focus in quite the direction. Sometimes the deepfake face seems to have a fixed expression even while the deepfake face is talking.
Then watch the mouth. The trick is to ignore what the deepfake face is saying for a moment and study how its lips move. If the mouth shape does not quite match sounds that is worth noticing. Teeth can also look strangely smooth or change shape between frames.
Watch the Edges
Hair is another giveaway. Individual strands are difficult to fake especially around the forehead and ears. The edge of the deepfake face may shimmer when the deepfake face moves. Glasses can expose problems too. Reflections sometimes. Behave differently from the rest of the image.
Do not forget lighting. If the deepfake face. The light on the skin stays strangely fixed pause there. Real faces sit inside the lighting as the room. A generated deepfake face can look like it has been pasted into that room when the effect is subtle.
Slow the Video Down
• A blink that looks slightly mechanical at speed can become obvious when slowed down especially around the eyelids.
• Skin texture may flicker between frames. It is not always dramatic. You may notice the deepfake face suddenly becoming softer for a moment.
• The background can wobble near the deepfake faces head, which’s easy to miss when you are paying attention to what the deepfake face is saying.
Check Where the Video Came From
This part gets ignored too often. If someone sends you a clip with no source do not immediately trust the deepfake face because it looks convincing. Search for the video. Check whether a reliable account posted it first. If the same clip appears with captions that is another reason to slow down.
Use Your Gut Verify It
A strange feeling is useful but it is not evidence, by itself. Maybe the lighting is unusual. Maybe the video was compressed by an app. Maybe the camera simply had a day.
So use your instincts as the alarm, not the verdict. Look for signs together. Then check the source. If possible find another recording of the same deepfake face.
The Biggest Clue
The biggest clue is usually inconsistency. The deepfake face looks right until it moves. The eyes look normal until the deepfake face turns. The mouth works until a word needs a sound.
You do not need eyesight or special software. You just need to stop for a few seconds and ask whether the deepfake face behaves like a face.
