Getting impersonated on Instagram feels weird. Someone is using your name, your photos, or both, and people you know may not even realize they’re talking to the wrong person. Your first instinct is usually to message the fake account.

Lock down your own account

If you still have access to your real profile, change your password right away. Turn on two factor authentication. Check your login activity and sign out of devices you don’t recognize. It feels boring. Do it anyway.

• Your password should be new, not the one you’ve recycled for years because it’s easy to remember.

• A recovery email matters more than people think. If that address isn’t yours anymore, fix it before anything else.

Tell people before the scam spreads

A fake profile usually starts messaging friends. Sometimes it asks for money. Sometimes it pushes fake investment links. The exact trick changes. The goal doesn’t.

Put up a story or a quick post saying there’s an impersonation account using your identity. Keep it simple. People who know you don’t need a long explanation. They just need to know which account is real.

If you lost access to your account

Because some impersonation scams turn into account takeovers, you may find yourself locked out completely. Use Instagram’s official recovery steps. Follow the identity checks if they’re requested. It can feel slow. Stick with the official process instead of paying someone online who promises instant recovery. Those offers are almost always another scam waiting for a victim.

And don’t trust random messages claiming they know an “ethical hacker” who fixes accounts for a fee. I have a pretty strong opinion on this. Screenshots of the fake profile, along with strange messages you received, make later reports much easier because details fade faster than you’d expect.

Give yourself a little breathing room

After the account is removed or recovered, spend a few minutes checking old passwords on your other accounts. If you’ve reused them, change them. Then move on. You don’t need to keep searching for the fake profile every hour.
