Start With the App Lock

The easiest win is also the one people skip. Turn on the app’s screen lock if it offers one. Use a strong PIN or your phone’s fingerprint or face unlock rather than leaving chats open for anyone holding your phone.

And don’t use the same PIN everywhere. If someone learns your phone code, they shouldn’t automatically get an easy route into every private conversation you have.

Check Your Account Security

Open the security settings inside your messaging app and look around. Seriously. You don’t need to understand every setting.

• Two-step verification is worth enabling, especially because losing control of your phone number can make account recovery messy.

• A recovery email should be one you actually control, not an old address you haven’t opened since college.

• Linked devices deserve a quick glance too. If you see a laptop or phone you don’t recognize, remove it immediately.

Be Careful With Messages and Links

A secure messaging app can’t protect you from every trick inside a message. Someone can still send a fake delivery notice. They can still pretend to be your bank. And a message from a familiar contact isn’t automatically safe if their account has been taken over.

Keep Private Chats Private

Some conversations simply shouldn’t be forwarded or stored forever. Check whether your app offers disappearing messages and use them when they make sense. Don’t treat the feature like magic, though. Someone can still photograph a screen with another device.

Update the App and Your Phone

• Automatic updates are usually the least annoying option, since the security work happens without you remembering it.

• An old phone that no longer receives security updates deserves some attention, even if the messaging app still opens normally.

What About Public Wi-Fi?

Public Wi-Fi isn’t automatically dangerous, but I wouldn’t treat an unfamiliar network as trusted. If you’re sending something genuinely sensitive, use your mobile connection or a reputable VPN.

Good messaging security should eventually feel boring. Your app locks itself. Updates happen. Unknown sessions get removed. You think twice before tapping strange links.
