QR payments seem simple. Open your payment app scan a code tap a button and you are done. That speed is what bad people like. You get used to moving so you might stop looking at what you are actually agreeing to.

How the Scam Usually Works

The trick is usually not complicated. A scammer puts a QR code where you expect to see an one. It could be on a shop counter, a message you get a refund notice or even a sticker that covers a real payment code. You scan it because the situation feels normal.

The code does not know who should get your money. It just tells your payment app what to do. A fake code can take you to a payment request or a fake page that wants your information.. If you agree without looking carefully the money can be gone before you know what happened.

The Refund Trap

Refund scams need attention. Someone contacts you. Says they are sending money back then asks you to scan a QR code to get it. That sounds okay until you look inside the payment app. Of getting money you are asked to approve a payment.

Why People Get Caught

No one wakes up thinking about getting scammed. The problem is speed and what you are used to. A QR code looks safe because you have seen many of them.. When someone is waiting for payment checking every screen can feel uncomfortable.

What to Look For Before Paying

• The name on the payment screen should match the person or business you are actually paying. If it does not stop there.

• A QR code that comes from a message should make you suspicious especially if you are told to act fast.

• Never enter your UPI PIN just to receive money. The PIN allows a payment so that request should make you stop.

• If someone says you must install an app or share your screen to finish a refund that is a warning sign and honestly I would leave.

• Check the amount before you agree to anything. The screen in front of you is more important than any amount someone says loud.

A Better Way to Use QR Payments

The way is simple. That is good. Before you agree to a payment look at the name of the person or business and the amount on your screen. If either one seems wrong do not go ahead.

Do not let pressure decide for you. A real cashier can wait. A real refund does not need you to be in a hurry. If someone keeps pushing you to scan there is a good reason to slow down.

QR payments are helpful because they do not get in your way. Keep them that way. Ten seconds of checking is a small cost, for making sure your money stays where you want it to be.
