Buying something through Instagram feels easy. That’s exactly why scammers like it. You see a nice product. The photos look polished. A few messages later you’re being asked to pay, and before you really stop to think, the money is gone.
Most scams don’t look obvious at first. They look normal enough. That’s the whole point.
The seller wants payment before anything else
One of the biggest warning signs is how quickly the conversation turns into payment. They don’t answer simple questions about the product. They keep saying someone else is about to buy it. Suddenly you’re being rushed.
Because pressure works. People make fast decisions when they think they’re about to miss out.
A deal that feels strangely cheap
Everyone likes saving money. But there’s a point where the price stops making sense. If a phone normally sells for a much higher amount and this seller is offering it for almost half, stop for a minute.
I don’t buy the excuse that someone “just wants it gone today.” Once in a while that happens. Constantly? Not really.
The profile doesn’t add up
Spend one minute looking at the account instead of the product.
• Very few posts, even though the seller claims they’ve been running a business for years. That gap usually tells its own story.
• Comments are turned off, or every comment looks strangely generic. Real buyers usually ask messy questions.
• A username that changed recently. It’s easy to miss, though it often shows up on accounts that get reused.
None of these signs prove it’s a scam by themselves. But once they start piling up, you shouldn’t ignore them.
They avoid normal questions
Ask for another photo with today’s date written on paper. Or request a short video showing the product from different angles.
A genuine seller normally doesn’t mind. A scammer suddenly has excuses. The lighting isn’t good. They’re busy. They’ll send it later. Somehow later never arrives.
Raj was looking for a second-hand camera last month. He noticed the seller kept sending the exact same two pictures every time he asked for another angle. Raj closed the chat and went back to making his evening tea. The next day the account had disappeared.
