How to Block Unknown Calls on iPhone
Unknown calls have a special talent for showing up when you’re busy. You’re in a meeting. You’re cooking. Your hands are wet. Then the iPhone rings with a number you’ve never seen before. Annoying.
The good news is you don’t have to block every number one at a time. On current versions of iOS, your iPhone can screen unknown callers or silence them completely, sending those calls to voicemail instead.
Silence calls from numbers you don’t know
If you want your phone to stop ringing whenever an unsaved number calls, this is the setting I’d use. It’s simple, and once it’s on, you barely notice it working.
Find the setting
Open Settings. Tap Apps, then Phone. Look for the section called Screen Unknown Callers. Choose Silence. From then on, calls from numbers that aren’t saved in your contacts are silenced and sent to voicemail. They can still appear in your call history.
And there’s an important catch. If someone you actually need to hear from calls from a new number, your iPhone won’t ring normally. So save important numbers in your Contacts before switching this on. Apple specifically recommends adding numbers you care about to Contacts.
Priya turned this on after getting tired of checking her phone every few minutes. The funny part was how quickly she stopped thinking about it. She just stopped reopening the same five tabs every morning to check whether one of those missed calls mattered.
Try Call Screening instead
Maybe you don’t want unknown calls completely silenced. Fair. Call Screening is a better middle ground because your iPhone can ask the caller for their name and reason for calling before it rings for you. You get some context first.
Go to Settings, tap Apps, then Phone. Under Screen Unknown Callers, choose Ask Reason for Calling. Your iPhone handles the first part of the conversation, then lets you decide whether you want to answer.
Honestly, this is my favorite option if you still get calls from delivery drivers, repair shops, or other numbers you haven’t saved.
Filter unknown and spam calls
There’s another useful setting if you want unknown calls moved out of your regular call list. In Settings, open Apps, choose Phone, then look under Call Filtering. Turn on Unknown Callers. Those calls are moved into a separate Unknown Callers list instead of sitting among your normal calls.
You can also turn on the Spam option if your carrier supports it. Calls your carrier identifies as potential spam or fraud are silenced and moved to the Spam list.
• Unknown Callers gets the clutter out of your main call list, though you can still check that separate folder when you’re expecting something important.
• Spam filtering is worth turning on if your carrier provides it. Fewer pointless interruptions is always a win.
Block one number permanently
Sometimes you know exactly who the problem is. In that case, don’t bother changing your settings for everyone.
Open the Phone app and find the number in your calls. Tap the number or its Info button, scroll down, then choose Block Caller. You can also manage blocked contacts from Settings.
A blocked caller can still leave a voicemail, but you won’t receive a notification about it. They also aren’t told that you blocked them.
That’s the part people sometimes miss. Blocking one annoying number and silencing every unknown number are completely different choices.
If you rarely need calls from strangers, Silence is probably the cleanest answer. If unknown calls sometimes matter, screening is less aggressive. Either way, your phone should feel like it belongs to you again. Why should a mystery number get to interrupt your afternoon?
